What are the basic differences between your types of fencing?

What do I need to tell a contractor who is going to build a fence for me?

Once you have decided to install a fence, you should be prepared to discuss the following points with your fence installation contractor:

  1. The primary purpose of the fence - privacy, security, safety, etc.
  2. The exact location of the fence, including spray painting the ground where you envision the corners and gate openings to be
  3. What type of design features you want (height, style, material)
  4. What you are willing to spend on the project (ask where you could cut corners)
  5. Desired completion date

What kind of fence will keep my pets confined but will not block my view?

Traditionally, a chain link fence will do the trick, but chain link fencing does not provide the beauty when compared to steel or aluminum fencing. As long as your pets are a decent size, most of our steel and aluminum fencing will keep them confined to your yard.

How deep do fence posts need to be set into the ground?

Standard depth is at least 24 inches, however, this depends on many factors, including the type of material used and the climate conditions in your area (prairie land (cracks when dry), snow/ice grounds, high wind areas, etc.). Please consult your local fencing contractor to be certain of your needs for your area.

How long will my fence last?

There are many factors that affect the life of a fence, including local climate, soil conditions and the materials used, to name a few. You can expect a properly installed fence to last many years, as long as it is appropriately maintained. If you're unsure, one of our friendly customer service representatives can help you decide which type of fence will serve your needs best.

What kind of guarantees can I expect from my fence contractor?

We recommend that you discuss specific warranty concerns with your fence contractor prior to installation. Material warranties are usually provided by the manufacturer. Workmanship is guaranteed by the contractor. The term of a warranty will vary from product to product. Be sure to read the fine print on all warranties.

How do I select a good fence contractor?

When contacting a fencing contractor:

  1. Ask for at least 3 customer references AND call them.
  2. Find out how long they have worked in your area (familiarity with local building and residential codes is important).
  3. Get at least 3 quotes on your fencing project.
  4. Ask if they are bonded (insured for damages and injuries on the job).
  5. Get a signed estimate for your fence and installation.
  6. Once all quotes are in, make sure the materials being used are a true "apples-to-apples" comparison.

Are there standards that pertain to fence materials and products?

Yes. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) develops and publishes standards for all types of fencing. A knowledgeable, well-trained fence contractor will be versed in ASTM standards for fence products and installation. Also, you can visit the American Fence Association for more helpful information.
